School Council

basketball ringSt Peter’s School Council was formed in 2004. The council enables pupils to have a voice and to understand that their opinions count. The school council has improved communication between pupils, teachers and the management of the School.
The school has developed into a community where teachers and children work in partnership towards shared goals.

The council members are children from years 3 – 6. Their peers democratically elect council representatives. The council is supported by the Deputy Head. It is hoped that for September 2008, there will be a Key Stage 1 Council.
The council meets regularly and frequently, (Tuesday 12.45- 1.15pm.)

The council originally worked in full consultation with the leadership of the school in developing the school playground. The council were consulted with regard to how they felt about school life generally and then further meetings focused on considering how they would like to improve their playground.
The children looked at maps of school and drew plans for developing specific areas for different interests. The council considered provision and costed equipment. The school now has an effective outdoor area which promotes learning.
